Some patients with acute cholecystitis undergo percutaneous cholecystostomy (PC) tube placement before or instead of cholecystectomy, but guidelines for indications and management are lacking. To develop guidance for use of PC tubes for acute cholecystitis, researchers performed a systematic review of 69 studies (most of which were retrospective studies of moderate quality).
Cholecystectomy generally should be preferred over PC tube placement; however, in poor surgical candidates with sepsis (in whom PC tube placement is superior to antibiotics alone), interval cholecystectomy ideally should be performed during the index hospitalization.
