1984 AMA guidelines suggested that healthy women with uncomplicated pregnancies need not modify their work activity before 20 weeks unless they have a past fetal loss or other medical conditions. This prospective study of 5144 pregnant women examined the role of physical exertion in spontaneous abortion (miscarriage within 20 weeks' gestation).
The spontaneous abortion rate was 10% among the 4064 employed women, most of them in various non-manual-labor occupations, and 8% among the 1080 non-employed women. Higher rates were associated with age over 32, two or more prior miscarriages, being unmarried, earlier gestational age at interview, absence of nausea during pregnancy, and greater alcohol and cigarette intake during pregnancy.
