Pimecrolimus and tacrolimus are topical, nonsteroidal calcineurin inhibitors used in the treatment of atopic dermatitis. Pimecrolimus 1% cream is approved for patients at least 2 years old with mild-to-moderate atopic dermatitis. Tacrolimus 0.03% ointment is approved for patients at least 2 years old with moderate-to-severe atopic dermatitis, and tacrolimus 0.1% is approved for patients 16 years and older with moderate-to-severe atopic dermatitis. Few studies have compared these two agents for the treatment of atopic dermatitis.
