Many clinics in the U.S. offer platelet-rich plasma (PRP) injections for erectile dysfunction, but the evidence to support this practice is weak. In this U.S. trial, researchers addressed this lack of data by randomizing 61 men to two intracavernosal PRP injections (1 month apart) or to placebo injections. Participants had mild-to-moderate erectile dysfunction and normal testosterone levels, and they were allowed to continue phosphodiesterase-5 (PDE5) inhibitors during the trial. PRP was separated from each patient's blood, and 5 mL was injected in total during each treatment session (2.5 mL on each side). Control patients had blood drawn and received saline injections.
