To determine whether four days of preoperative lactulose treatment could mitigate pain after hemorrhoidectomy, investigators conducted a prospective, double-blind, randomized trial in 42 patients. Twenty patients received 15 ml of lactulose three times a day for four days before admission to the hospital; 22 patients received placebo. All patients received lactulose from the day of admission to the day of discharge.
As compared with the placebo group, the patients who received pre-admission lactulose had earlier and more frequent bowel movements, had less pain once the movements began, and required less pain medication. The group also had shorter hospital stays.
