Several scoring systems have been developed to predict rebleeding and mortality in patients with nonvariceal upper gastrointestinal bleeding (UGIB), but these scores were not designed to predict rebleeding after endoscopic therapy. Also, in a recent comprehensive review of endoscopic therapies for UGIB (JW Gastroenterol May 1 2009), risk factors for rebleeding were not covered.
To shed light on the issue, investigators performed a meta-analysis of studies that addressed postendoscopic therapy. Of 2193 relevant citations, 14 studies (12 full articles and 2 abstracts) involving 3609 patients met the prespecified inclusion criteria. Pooled results were calculated for factors identified by multivariate analysis in two or more studies.
