The Glasgow Coma Scale (GCS) score was developed 30 years ago and remains a frequently utilized clinical tool to assess patients with head injury. These authors compared the prehospital GCS score with the first GCS score obtained in the emergency department for 3052 patients admitted to a single level I trauma center.
Severity of head injury was classified according to prehospital score as mild (GCS score, 13–15) in 2618 patients, moderate (GCS score, 9–12) in 257 patients, and severe (GCS score, 3–8) in 177 patients. Transport time was 17.7 minutes overall, and 17.9, 17.5, and 13.8 minutes in the mild, moderate, and severe categories, respectively.
