Acetaminophen is taken by >50% of pregnant women and is associated with elevated symptoms of attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) by age 7 years (JAMA Pediatr 2014; 168:313). To test whether only in utero exposure is the culprit, researchers have now examined the effects of postnatal acetaminophen, taken by either parent, in an analysis of data on 7796 children and their parents enrolled in a U.K. longitudinal study.
Parents completed questionnaires about their acetaminophen use at prenatal 18 and 32 weeks and when children were aged 5 years. Child behavior was assessed at age 7 years.
