Hypertrophic scars tend to form in areas of significant skin tension. Attempts at prevention have generally been unsuccessful. On the trunk, at the time of suture removal (usually, 2 weeks after surgery), scar tissue has only 20% of the presurgical skin strength. Long-lasting support of new scars might help reduce tension and prevent hypertrophic scar formation. In this randomized, controlled trial from Australia, 70 patients who underwent a first cesarean section were randomized to apply paper tape across their scars for 12 weeks or to have no suture-line care after suture removal (controls). The tape was kept in place up to 7 days between changes.
