Seizures after cerebrovascular stroke can be challenging to control. Levetiracetam is a widely used, well-tolerated antiseizure medication, but it hasn’t been compared head-to-head with the older antiseizure medication valproic acid in patients with poststroke seizures.
In this observational study drawn from a national claims database in Taiwan, researchers evaluated roughly 1500 patients who were hospitalized for seizures within 2 years of a stroke diagnosis and discharged on either levetiracetam (740 patients) or valproic acid (786 patients).
