Premenstrual syndrome (PMS), the emotional, behavioral, and physical symptoms that occur around the menstrual period, occurs in about 7 million American women. Progesterone is the most commonly used treatment for PMS, but whether this therapy has any effect is uncertain. Thus, these investigators performed a randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled, crossover trial of progesterone suppositories in 168 women seeking treatment for PMS. Progesterone was administered during days 16 to 28 of the menstrual cycle at a dosage of 400 mg per day during one cycle followed by 800 mg per day during the second cycle.
