Pruritus, a common complaint during pregnancy, can be a symptom of a number of confusing gestational skin conditions, such as herpes gestationis, pruritus gravidarum, polymorphic eruption of pregnancy, prurigo gestationis of Besnier, and pruritic folliculitis of pregnancy. The complicated terminology and overlap of conditions has led to a poor understanding of the true incidence of these disorders and of the maternal and fetal risks. The authors of this study sought to clarify the causes of itching during pregnancy.
