Hypertension is a key risk factor for adverse health outcomes, but many adults have inadequately controlled blood pressure, in part due to suboptimal treatment adherence. To evaluate the public’s understanding of hypertension, researchers in Australia distributed a survey to adults who had participated in blood pressure screening at free health kiosks. More than 800 adults (response rate, 4%; 36% with hypertension) completed the survey.
About one quarter of respondents thought stress was the main cause of high blood pressure.
About one quarter of respondents were unaware that hypertension usually is asymptomatic, and almost half thought that they didn’t need to take antihypertensives on days they felt well.
