Pyoderma gangrenosum (PG) is an ulcerative condition of the skin caused by an inflammatory process. There are no diagnostic studies for this entity, and the diagnosis is confirmed by exclusion of other conditions. These authors retrospectively analyzed data on patients given initial diagnoses of PG over 25 years.
The researchers found a striking percentage of patients (roughly 10% of those seen at their institution) in whom vascular diseases, infections, neoplasias, and other conditions had been misdiagnosed as PG.
