Tretinoin is extensively used in the treatment of photoaging. A variety of concentrations (0.01% to 0.1%) and vehicles are used in an effort to limit tretinoin-induced irritation while maximizing the treatment's effects. Because the beneficial effects are slow to appear, irritation leads many patients to stop therapy before maximal improvement has been achieved. In this study, sponsored by Ortho Dermatological, investigators formulated a higher concentration of tretinoin (0.25% in a solution of 50% ethanol and 50% polyethylene glycol) and used it to treat 50 women ages 30 to 60 with a variety of skin problems, including photodamage, rosacea, melasma, and acne vulgaris.
