The standard schedule for hepatitis B vaccination in adults is a series of three injections given over six months. But an accelerated schedule might be preferable for those at high risk, such as newly employed health care workers, or to improve compliance.
In this study, 230 volunteers working in high-risk environments were randomized to receive either standard immunization (at 0, 1, and 6 months) or rapid immunization (at 0, 1, and 2 months). At 3 months, the rate of seroprotection (hepatitis B surface antibody above 10 mIU/mL) was significantly higher in the rapid-schedule group than in the standard group (96 vs. 73 percent).
