Vasospasm is a component of three distinct conditions: Raynaud's phenomenon, migraine headache, and variant angina. This study explored possible relations among these clinical entities.
The investigators analyzed extensive questionnaires completed by two groups: 93 patients with Raynaud's phenomenon but no clinical evidence of a connective-tissue disorder, and 93 controls matched for age and sex. The questionnaires incorporated previously validated questions designed to detect migraine and angina.
Questionnaire responses suggested a diagnosis of migraine in 61 percent of the Raynaud's patients and 23 percent of the controls -- a significant difference. Patients were also significantly more likely than controls to report chest pain (47 percent…
