The widely used McDonald criteria for diagnosing multiple sclerosis (MS) were recently updated to incorporate new information, enabling earlier diagnosis and treatment. The full update was published in October 2025. Now, U.K. researchers have compared the performance of the updated criteria with that of the previous (2017) criteria in patients referred to London neurology clinics for evaluation of suspected MS throughout 2024.
Among the 347 referred patients, 21% were found to have other diagnoses (most commonly migraine and functional disorders) and were excluded from subsequent analysis.
