Discontinuation of acid inhibition, particularly by proton-pump inhibitors (PPIs), is associated with a transient increase in gastric acid secretion that is thought to result from hypergastrinemia. The duration and clinical significance of this transient increase are unclear. To address this issue, investigators studied seven patients who were awaiting anti-reflux surgery and who had been treated with PPIs for at least 18 months. All patients were able to discontinue PPI therapy after surgery. Blood levels of gastrin and chromogranin A were evaluated before surgery and at 4, 8, 16, and 26 weeks after surgery. Pentagastrin-stimulated gastric secretion was performed at each time point after surgery.
