In the United States, most meningococcal disease is caused by serogroups B, C, W and Y. Risk factors include functional or anatomic asplenia, congenital or acquired complement deficiencies, HIV infection, living in crowded settings, and close contact with people with meningococcal disease. There are two licensed quadrivalent vaccines (serogroups A, C, W, Y [MenACWY]), two licensed serogroup B vaccines (MenB), and since 2023 one pentavalent vaccine (A, B, C, W, and Y).
