Treatments for stress reduction, such as anxiolytics and relaxation therapy, have been successful in some women with significant premenstrual syndrome. This randomized trial found that reflexology improves both somatic and psychological symptoms of PMS.
Fifty women with PMS were assigned to eight weekly half- hour sessions of true reflexology or placebo treatment. Reflexology consisted of manual pressure to acupuncture areas on the ears, hands, and feet that corresponded to the ovary, uterus, pituitary and adrenal glands, kidney, celiac plexus, and sympathetic nervous system.
