Narcolepsy is characterized by daytime sleepiness and intrusions into wakefulness of REM sleeplike phenomena, including cataplexy and hypnagogic hallucinations. In addition, people with narcolepsy can have a failure of paralysis during REM sleep known as REM sleep behavior disorder (RBD), with often-wild and sometimes-violent enactment of vivid dreams.
In this simple study, researchers sent surveys to sleep clinic patients with narcolepsy, to learn more about the prevalence and symptoms of RBD. They telephoned those who noted having RBD to confirm that their behaviors fit the diagnosis.
