Childhood deaths due to influenza have been reported in the U.S. over the past 2 decades. The 2024–25 season recorded 280 pediatric deaths attributable to influenza, the most since the 2009 H1N1 pandemic. A new report from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention provides more details about these deaths.
The median age of the children was 7 years; 61% of the deaths occurred in children under age 9 (see ).
Seven percent of the children were younger than 6 months and therefore not vaccine eligible.
Of those who were vaccine eligible and had vaccine information available, 89% were not fully vaccinated against influenza.
Most of the deaths (86%) were caused by influenza A; 56% were H1N1 subtype and 43%, H3N2.
