Salicylic acid peels are reportedly useful in patients with recalcitrant melasma, but controlled trials have been lacking until now. To assess the efficacy of adding salicylic acid peels to hydroquinone treatment, these authors enrolled 20 Latina women with previously diagnosed melasma in a prospective, split-face study.
Every 2 weeks for 8 weeks, each subject received a 20% to 30% salicylic acid peel to one side of the face. Both sides of the face were concurrently treated with twice-daily 4% hydroquinone cream.
