When incubated in 1 mol/l sodium chloride for a few days, skin forms a reproducible blister through the lamina lucida. Immune deposits have been shown to localize to either the epidermal or dermal side of the blister, allowing for more precise classification of the disease process. These investigators used the salt-split skin technique to study antibody binding in 25 patients known to have antibodies against bullous pemphigoid antigen 1 or 2 or collagen VII. Patients with antiepiligrin cicatricial pemphigoid were also studied.
