Consistent use of antiseizure medications (ASMs) is crucial for people with epilepsy, but we don’t yet know the best way to identify and address barriers to ASM adherence. Here, researchers describe their use of an 18-item questionnaire, the Barriers to Adherence Tool (BAT), among children with epilepsy at a single hospital.
During a 4-year period, patients and caregivers were asked to complete the BAT before every clinical appointment. If they reported any barriers, their clinical team was alerted, and their after-visit patient instructions were auto-populated with tips for addressing their specific barriers.
