Currently, no effective screening regimen exists for pancreatic cancer. As such, efforts have mostly been concentrated in patients at high risk for developing the disease due to genetic conditions.
Now, in one such effort, investigators in Italy have evaluated a large cohort of high-risk individuals who underwent annual screening using magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) with magnetic resonance cholangiopancreatography or endoscopic ultrasound (EUS) in those who could not undergo MRI. All individuals had familial pancreatic cancer or established high-risk mutations including BRCA1, BRCA2, or p16/CDKN2A genes; PRSS1-related hereditary pancreatitis; or Peutz-Jeghers syndrome.
