Bullous pemphigoid is an autoimmune disease that responds well to treatment with moderate doses of prednisone. In some cases there is concern that the glucocorticoid may cause more problems than it helps, especially in elderly patients who take multiple drugs or have other medical conditions. Tetracycline and nicotinamide have been used alone and in combination to treat bullous pemphigoid. This study determined the effect of daily treatment with 2 g of each of these drugs on the extent of disease in 7 patients with bullous pemphigoid.
When patients were clear for 4 weeks, the dose of each drug was dropped to 1 g. For patients who stayed clear, the dose was dropped by 500 mg every 4 weeks. All 7 patients cleared after 5 to 7 months of treatme…
