Either psychotherapy or antidepressant medication is effective treatment for mild-to-moderate depression, and combining the two is optimal therapy for moderate-to-severe depression. This article will provide an overview of one class of antidepressants: selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs). In addition to treating depression, some SSRIs are FDA-approved to treat obsessive-compulsive disorder, bulimia nervosa, panic disorder, social phobia, post-traumatic stress disorder, and premenstrual dysmorphic disorder -- each of which frequently coexists with depression.
