Therapy with either a sodium–glucose cotransporter-2 inhibitor (SGLT-2i) or a glucagon-like peptide-1–receptor agonist (GLP-1RA) is associated with improved cardiovascular (CV) and kidney outcomes in type 2 diabetes. However, it’s unclear whether these benefits are additive when the two drug classes are combined. In this report, researchers identified 6 placebo-controlled randomized trials involving SGLT-2 inhibitors and 6 involving GLP-1 agonists in patients with type 2 diabetes. Using a technique called network meta-analysis, they estimated indirectly how CV and kidney outcomes with combination therapy might compare to outcomes with either drug class alone.
