In most previous studies of cellulitis, antibiotics were administered for 7 to 10 days. These authors assessed whether shorter courses would be as effective as standard 10-day courses. In a randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled study, they compared 5-day and 10-day courses of oral levofloxacin in 121 patients.
The many exclusion criteria included abscesses, animal-bite wounds, and diabetic foot ulcers, but not diabetes. The authors chose levofloxacin as the study antibiotic because its spectrum of coverage encompasses most agents that cause cellulitis and it can be administered once daily, thereby increasing adherence.
