Sildenafil (Viagra), a new oral drug for erectile dysfunction, was recently released in the U.S. amidst almost unprecedented media attention. In this 24-week randomized study, 532 men diagnosed with organic (78%), psychogenic (9%), or mixed (13%) erectile dysfunction received either placebo or sildenafil (25 mg, 50 mg, or 100 mg).
At baseline, the average response to a question about frequency of penetration was about 2.0 on a scale of 1 to 5 (1 being never or almost never and 5 being always or almost always). The three doses of sildenafil improved scores to 3.2, 3.5, and 4.0, respectively; there was no response to placebo. Results were similar for a question about maintaining erections after penetration.
