Treating bifurcation stenoses is challenging, due to the technical complexity and the extra risks for restenosis and stent thrombosis. Now, in a randomized trial conducted in five northern European countries, researchers randomized 413 patients with de novo bifurcation lesions to either (1) a simple strategy of stenting only the main vessel, with discretionary side-branch stenting; or (2) a procedurally more complex strategy of stenting both the main vessel and the side branch. Index lesions were in the left anterior descending artery in 73% of patients and in the left-main stem in only 2%. The mean reference diameter of the side branch was 2.6 mm.
