The mainstay therapy for cholera is rehydration, but the addition of antibiotics can decrease the severity and duration of illness. Tetracycline is the antibiotic of choice for cholera, but the intensity of the regimen remains unclear. This study involved 261 patients with cholera admitted to a hospital in Bangladesh. Patients were randomized to three regimens: a single 200-mg dose of doxycycline, a single 300-mg dose of doxycycline, or multiple doses of tetracycline (500 mg every 6 hours for eight doses), and were followed until their diarrhea had stopped for 24 hours.
