Recent studies have clearly demonstrated the existence of a “skin–brain axis,” involving interaction and communication between the nervous system and cells in the skin. Such interactions have been observed in atopic eczema, itch, and conditions of acute stress. These authors studied hypersensitive skin in patients with chronic headaches, particularly migraines. The study included 16,753 individuals with chronic headaches who responded to mailed questionnaires. All participants had been previously validated as having primary headaches, including transformed migraine; episodic migraines; probable migraines; severe, episodic tension-type headaches; and other chronic daily headaches.
