Structured measures of vital organ function, such as the APACHE, MODS, and Sequential Organ Failure Assessment (SOFA) scores, help quantify illness severity in critically ill patients. Clinicians encounter their use in clinical prediction tools like Sepsis-3 — which includes the SOFA score and its simplified version, qSOFA — and use them in estimating outcomes during conversations with patients and their families.
