Cataracts are common, and their prevalence increases with age. Researchers have reported an elevated rate of cataracts in patients receiving amitriptyline for depression. To examine potential links between cataracts and newer antidepressants (selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors [SSRIs] or the serotonin–norepinephrine reuptake inhibitor venlafaxine), these investigators used Quebec's health insurance databases to conduct a nested case-control study of patients who had undergone cardiac revascularization (mean age, 73).
Cases were 18,784 patients who had received an ophthalmologist's diagnosis of cataracts, and controls were 187,840 patients who had not. Analyses were adjusted for gender, hypertension, antihypertensive medications, statins…
