More than 17 million U.S. women are at high risk of sexually transmitted diseases because they or their male partners have multiple partners. A study based on the National Survey of Family Growth (1988 and 1995) and the General Social Survey (1988 to 1996) analyzed men's and women's responses to queries about recent sexual activity. Data were available for 50,827 women.
About 90% of women and men aged 18 to 44 reported having sex in the past year, and most (80% to 86% of women and 76% of men) had only 1 partner. However, about 10% of sexually active people had 2 partners in the past year and about 5% to 10% of women and 14% to 18% of men reported 3 or more partners.
