Behçet's disease is characterized by recurrent oral and genital ulceration and uveitis. Oral suspension of sucralfate (an aluminum salt of sucrose octasulfate) is often used for peptic ulcers as a protectant of ulcerated mucosa. These Turkish investigators examined the efficacy of sucralfate for treating oral and genital ulcers in patients with Beçhet's disease.
The baseline incidence of ulceration was determined once patients were off systemic and topical therapy. Forty patients were randomized to receive sucralfate (5 ml) or placebo suspension for three months four times daily as a one to two minute mouth rinse for oral ulcers, or topically for genital ulcers.
