Researchers have studied, without definitively answering, an intriguing question: Is suicide completion related to season of birth? To learn more, these investigators obtained data on all births in Hungary in 1930–1969, except for 2 years during World War II, and on all deaths in 1970–2008 (from a registry begun in 1970). Analyses included total suicides by violent versus nonviolent methods and according to gender and proximity to actual date of birth.
Of 6,697,361 people, 78,740 with known birth months died by suicide. Most suicides were by males (77.3%). Overall, the occurrence of suicides peaked from April through August. Risk for suicide was highest in people with July births (7.6% increased risk compared with the average trend) and lowe…
