Pompholyx, also known as dyshidrotic eczema, is a common condition characterized by recurrent pruritic, spongiotic vesicles of the palms and soles. The cause remains unknown, although various factors precipitate flares, including stress and such irritants as heat, humidity, and hot and cold weather. Over 12 years, a Scottish photobiology group identified five individuals with sunlight-induced pompholyx of the hand, a previously unknown condition.
In each case, flares occurred after exposure to sunlight, direct or through window glass, and broad-spectrum sunscreens and gloves provided varying degrees of protection.
