Superovulation (stimulation of the ovaries with gonadotropins to develop dominant follicles) and intrauterine insemination (IUI, deposition of semen into the uterus) are commonly used in couples with unexplained or male-factor infertility. However, no randomized trial has assessed the efficacy and safety of these interventions. This U.S. trial studied 932 infertile couples in which the woman had no identifiable cause of infertility and the man had motile sperm. "No treatment" was defined as intracervical insemination during spontaneous ovulation. Investigators randomized couples to no treatment, IUI, or superovulation combined with IUI or with intracervical insemination.
