Numerous studies have shown the value of temporal lobectomy in patients with refractory temporal lobe epilepsy (TLE), but only a few of these studies have compared surgically treated patients with a control group of medically treated patients. These authors examined seizure frequency and antiepileptic drug (AED) use in a comparison of surgically and medically treated patients with refractory TLE. Patients who met the following criteria were included in the study: (1) seizures refractory to at least 2 standard AEDs; (2) diagnosis of TLE after presurgical evaluation; (3) either surgical or medical management between presurgical evaluation and the follow-up visit; and (4) follow-up of >1 year.
