Vitiligo occurs in all ages and can be psychologically devastating. The mainstays of current therapy are topical steroids and phototherapy, alone or in combination. Such treatment is limited by a lack of safety and efficacy data and by the potential for adverse effects.
These investigators reviewed tacrolimus treatment of 57 pediatric patients with vitiligo (generalized, 58%; segmental, 37%; acrofacial, 5%; age range, 4-16 years; 44% white, 28% Latino, 16% black, 6% East Indian, 3% Asian, and 3% Middle Eastern). In the 43 patients who had undergone other treatment, topical steroids and phototherapy (various PUVA or sunlight regimens) had produced little improvement.
