Thermage monopolar radiofrequency (RF) treatment is used to tighten lax skin at many body locations. However, until now, the necessary depth of RF penetration (2.5 mm) has been too deep for the safe treatment of eyelids. In this multicenter trial, 72 patients with eyelid laxity underwent Thermage treatment using a new 0.25-cm2 tip with a penetration depth of only 1.5 mm. Treatment took place without anesthesia or analgesia at a mean energy setting of 12 J/cm2. Multiple passes were repeated until tissue edema became evident; the average treatment required 588 pulses and took 73 minutes to complete. Patients reported discomfort levels of 2.0 to 2.5 on a 0-to-4 pain scale.
