Dermatologists are well aware of the potential risks to a fetus exposed to oral isotretinoin during the first trimester of pregnancy. Because of these risks, many clinicians have been concerned about the use of topical tretinoin during pregnancy. In a restrospective review, these authors compared the rates of birth defects among infants of women exposed to topical tretinoin and infants of women not exposed.
