Pelvic inflammatory disease (PID) can be difficult to diagnose by history, pelvic examination, and simple laboratory testing. This case series suggests that transvaginal sonography, a noninvasive procedure easily performed in the outpatient setting, is a worthwhile adjunctive diagnostic test.
Fifty-one outpatients with suspected PID underwent both endometrial biopsy and transvaginal sonography. Sonography results were read independently of biopsy results and clinical findings. Biopsies documented plasma cell endometritis in 13 women. Sonography revealed thickened, fluid-filled fallopian tubes in 11 of these 13 women and in none of the 38 women with negative biopsies, and thus had a sensitivity of 85 percent and a specificity of 100 percent f…
