Psychiatric patients often complain about chronic insomnia. Frequently, drug treatment for the underlying psychiatric disorder leads to resolution of sleep difficulties even when the medication does not have sedative properties, but many patients continue to complain of sleep difficulties. Although benzodiazepines are the first choice for short-term treatment of insomnia, patients may develop tolerance to their hypnotic effects, which can then exacerbate sleep problems.
