Biliary colic is a common presenting symptom in the emergency department. These researchers performed a prospective, randomized, double-blind study comparing intravenous ketorolac (30 mg) with IV meperidine (50 mg) analgesia for patients with biliary colic. Patients were excluded if they were younger than 18 or older than 65, were pregnant, or had a history of peptic ulcer disease, bleeding disorders, or immunocompromise. A convenience sample of 534 patients was enrolled over 2 years.
Patients were given rescue analgesia with 50 mg IV meperidine, if needed, 1 hour after receiving the study drug and prochlorperazine for nausea at any time. More than 80% of the patients were women. All patients had gallstones that were confirmed by ultrasound.…
