In most studies evaluating peptic ulcer relapse rates following eradication of Helicobacter pylori, follow-up has been rather short. This Dutch study provided extended follow-up for 141 patients with duodenal ulcer and 45 with gastric ulcer in whom eradication of H. pylori and ulcer healing had been endoscopically proven. A variety of anti-H. pylori drug regimens were used.
All patients had endoscopy every three months for the first year after treatment, and were then advised to contact their doctor if symptoms recurred. In addition, about half had routine endoscopic surveillance every six months after the first year.
